Interested in the The National Student Law Society (NSLS) Annual Mooting Competition 2013 - 2014? Come for an informational meeting on 10th October at 4:00 at Forgan's!

Mooting is the oral presentation of a legal issue or problem against an opposing counsel and before a judge. It is perhaps the closest experience that a student can have whilst at university to appearing in court. It offers the opportunity to develop several skills that are critical in the legal profession. These include research skills, written and oral communication skills. Additionally mooting is a fantastic way to develop their time management skills, their ability to work under pressure and to work effectively as a team.

St Andrews is looking to enter one or two teams in The National Student Law Society Annual Mooting Competition. Teams are composed of two students – a Lead Counsel (15 min presentation) and Junior Counsel (12 min presentation). We will be competing against other non-Law students and first year Law students from universities across the UK.

The competition starts in November, consisting of five rounds with the semi-final being held in the Royal Courts of Justice and the final in April in the Supreme Court! Throughout the competition the NSLS will run mooting workshops as well as distribute guidance and tips to help develop participant’s mooting skills.

As St Andrews has no Law department the teams will have to travel to Dundee to use their Law library to research their cases for their argument. Edinburgh Mooters (and Law students) advised minimum a full day and a half’s work focused solely on preparing for a moot. We will be travelling to other Universities to compete and the Society will subsidise travel expenses.

The 2nd October trip to Edinburgh’s Court of Session and Advocacy Skills workshop is highly recommended for anyone interested. Edinburgh’s Mooting Society will discuss the process and give their experience and insight. To enter or if you have any queries about the competition please email Charlotte at ctb@st-andrews.ac.uk. Deadline for entry is 20th October.

*****There will be an information session to discuss this at Forgan’s Thursday 10th October at 16:00. ********
