‘Beer with a Barrister’: Jason Sugarman of 9 – 12 Bell Yard Chambers

This is a great relaxed and informal chat over a beer (or whatever you fancy) with Jason Sugarman, a practising barrister for 18 years. Jason has specialised in complex commercial fraud. He has also prosecuted and defended in many serious cases including murder, drugs and serious sexual offences as well as defended police officers in inquests and advised police forces on disciplinary tribunal matters. He was recently instructed in a very complicated and serious manslaughter case involving the death of two fire-fighters at a fireworks factory in Sussex and he successfully prosecuted the first SOCA case involving the importation of opium.

Jason has also advised on banking and regulatory matters including insider dealing and market abuse against the FSA and defended in large fraud cases including a SFO case involving the financing of gold mining and processing in the United States. Before coming to the Bar, Jason acquired experience working for a UK food company involved in intellectual property litigation in the United States and France.

Jason will talk about all aspects of his career, working life, mini-pupillages, the Inns of Court, and qualifying as a barrister.

The event will be held at the One Under at the Macdonald Rusacks Hotel and will start at 7pm. Your first drink will be paid for by the Society! Please email Charlotte at ctb@st-andrews.ac.uk if you have any questions.
